Growing Ambitions welcomes ‘careers adviser for every school’ Conservative Green Paper

Growing Ambitions, not-for-profit broker of careers speakers for UK education, welcomes the latest Policy Green Paper dealing with the skills strategy from the Conservative Party – ‘Building Skills, Transforming Lives: A Training and Apprenticeships Revolution’

This document proposes a “revolution in careers advice” with £180 million to fund a careers adviser in every secondary school and college in England (page 9).

Sally Davis, MD of Growing Ambitions said: “For many years careers information and advice has been under-funded and advisers have been under-resourced. Half of careers advisers in schools have had no formal training so in spite of their best efforts, they are simply not equipped to help young people make good career choices. Having a fully trained and dedicated careers adviser in every secondary school and college would make a huge difference – and certainly enable us at Growing Ambitions to better help the young people with their work-related learning.”

Growing Ambitions is building an online database of over 30,000 careers speakers from the workplace – private and public sector – from drain surgery to brain surgery.

Sally Davis again: “Young people really need to know what opportunities are out there to make good career choices that last. The UK needs more skilled people and employers can invest in the next generation simply by encouraging their employees to give half-hour career talks through us. People register online, and wait to be contacted by a careers adviser in a school college or university near them. They can then agree a date and time to suit.

“Our new White Label option enables employers to have the volunteering portal, on their own website, in their livery, and attract education to their door to find their volunteers. This is powerful. We need far more interaction between business and education in this nation, and the benefits of employee volunteering to the bottom line are considerable. Being able to recruit better trained people, would mean they’d no longer have to train them once employed.”
