The Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre - Europe’s first ever, purpose built breast cancer prevention centre - opens its doors on 8th July.
The Centre, built with £12 million from the NHS and £2 million from the Genesis Appeal, will provide diagnostic and outpatients services for around 500 women every week.
The Genesis Appeal is the UK’s only charity entirely dedicated to preventing breast cancer. The Genesis Research Team believes that research into prevention, screening and early diagnosis is the way forward to help the next generation to live free from the fear of breast cancer. Research at the new Centre will be headed by three world renowned, Manchester-based professors: Tony Howell, Gareth Evans and Nigel Bundred. The Centre will provide a base for one of the most ambitious breast cancer research programmes in Europe.

The opening of the Centre will be marked with a world record attempt. In consultation with the Guinness Book of World Records, the building will be wrapped in miles of ribbon and the world’s longest ribbon cutting ceremony will be held. All those present will cut the ribbon together to symbolise the teamwork that has gone into the building of the Centre.

•The services at the original Nightingale Centre in Withington will transfer to the purpose built centre throughout August. The original Nightingale Centre was the centrepiece of a workhouse and poor house hospital built in 1865. In 1988, fundraisers and staff raised £250,000 by public donation to convert the old chapel at Withington Hospital into a breast-screening centre. Each year 50,000 women are invited for screening and the Nightingale Centre will diagnose around 650 cancers per year. The Nightingale Centre is one of six national mammography training centres and houses the largest family history clinic in the UK. Staff are delighted to move to the state-of-the art centre where patients will receive the highest quality care in a purpose built environment.
