Futuristic Event With Pacemaker Hand Held DJ System Signals The End Of The Turntable
On 22nd August, legendary club promoters Back To Basics are to stage a big warehouse party at Victoria Works in Leeds, headlined in a rare appearance by Sasha. The second room will be hosted exclusively by Pacemaker, the revolutionary, hand held DJ system and for the 1st time ever there will be no turntables, vinyl or CD. The DJs will play all night, using only Pacemakers and will be free to step out from behind the DJ box, to move around the room and interact directly with the crowd.
Pacemaker creators, Swedish tech company Tonium, have always been at pains to point out that Pacemaker is designed to complement, not replace turntables. However, as more and more DJs and music lovers willingly embrace new technology, including the use of laptops, so the once unassailable turntable appears to be on ever shakier ground.
Back To Basics promoter Dave Beer comments,
“Basics has always prided itself on being at the forefront of cutting edge music, keeping up with technology and moving with the times. We are delighted to get involved with Pacemaker. The concept is unbelievable. It is probably the best invention since the Sony Walkman. I have always had a problem with having to stay behind the decks when there’s a great party going on! Now there are no constraints on the DJ, it’s very exciting.”
Passions run high when you talk about the future of turntables. They’ve played a significant part in most people’s lives. Does a futuristic and portable, hand held DJ system mean turntables will inevitably become redundant? Also, is the advent of the Pacemaker the beginning of a new type of DJ; one who can join the party, or really take the spotlight? Will we see DJs strut down walkways to stand on a podium above the crowd as they perform, like axe wielding rock gods performing a solo?
Pacemaker is a unique music player; the equivalent of two turntables, a mixer and every record you’ve ever owned all in the palm of your hand. You can play two tracks simultaneously, beat match, crossfade, use EQs, filters, effects and loops, just about everything you can do with a traditional DJ set up. And the technology continues to move forwards with regular new improvements and innovations.

On 22nd August at the Basics Warehouse Party we will get a glimpse of the future.
