H J Berry Secure Prestigious Award
John Woodruffe and Andrew Berry
The unique green formula of a British furniture manufacturer has seen it fight off competition from top businesses to secure a prestigious award.
Lancashire based HJ Berry won the North West section of the National Business Awards, sponsored by Orange – regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of British commerce.
HJ Berry was one of four on the shortlist in the Corporate Responsibility sector of the award’s programme.
The company, based in the Forest of Bowland, drew heavily on its commitment to the local area and environment.
Staff benefits include low-cost homes for rent in the pictureseque village of Chipping, around the factory site. In addition the company heats its manufacturing plant with off cuts of wood, and materials are sourced from as close to the factory as possible.
HJ Berry also has a policy of only using sustainable British-grown beech, ash, oak and other woods for its furniture and works closely with the Lancashire Woodlands Project.
Testimony to their long-term view on green business activity is the forest HJ Berry has created in the company’s grounds, with the planting of more than 20,000 trees – which will be ready to start being used for furniture production in 70 years’ time.
HJ Berry MD John Woodruffe said: “We are absolutely delighted.
“As a British manufacturer, we are delighted that our work to support our people and the planet has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”
Now HJ Berry will be getting the show on the road once again, to attend the national finals of the British Business Award in London. More details of the awards are at http://www.nationalbusinessawards.com/regionals
HJ Berry started producing furniture in 1840 and is believed to be the oldest chair manufacturer in the country.
Part of its factory is based within a mill once used by a pioneer of the Industrial Revolution, Sir Richard Arkwright.
The site still retains a waterwheel which powered the plant up to the 20th century.

Based in Kirk Mills, Chipping, Preston, Lancashire, HJ Berry manufactures furniture for the nursing and healthcare sector, as well as commercial and residential markets.
