68 Year Old Trains for London Marathon with Osteopathic Support (Case Study)

In 2005, Carole Rowland decided to train for the 2006 London Marathon but soon after her training started she began to get problems in her thigh and calf muscles. She had developed a condition common to runners called shin splints.

Her osteopath, Sally Lansdale of the Leominster Osteopathic Clinic in Hertfordshire, suggested that she take a magnesium supplement to help with the extra work required by the muscles and gave her some excercises to balance and strengthen her lower leg and to keep her feet and knees in alignment. In addition Sally treated Carole for a problem with her knee cap that was causing her pain.

With her osteopath's support Carole successfully completed the 2006 London Marathon with a time of 5.42 and followed it by completing a half marathon the next week.

Unfortunately, in follow-up training, Carole started to get pains in her right buttock and this steadily got worse with pain right down her leg. Again, her osteopath was on hand with treatment, tips and excercises and the pain started to improve.

Aged 68, Carole is now set to run this year's London Marathon on Sunday April 22nd and will be raising money for The Macmillan Renton Cancer Appeal (part of the Hereford County Hospital appeal to update their breast cancer unit)

Carole is happy to talk (and be photographed) regarding running in this week-end's London Marathon, and Sally Lansdale, her osteopath, is available to give last minute tips and excercises to runners who have been training to take part.
