ADHD - when one size does not fit all

Recent controversy over the use of drugs to modify the behaviour of children with ADHD has come as no surprise to natural healthcare practitioner Mark Mathews.

Mark, a distinguished osteopath who founded the Rêve Pavilion Natural Health Clinic almost 20 years ago, has a special interest in emotional and behavioural problems in children.

He says: “ADHD is just a label given to a varied set of symptoms and different children have it for different reasons. Usually, it is the interactive result of a lot of separate elements. Using drugs to suppress the symptoms, using special teaching methods or counselling on their own will not always make a great difference and they are expensive, long term and time consuming for the children and their families.

“Of course it would be marvellous to be able to use a simple ‘one size fits all’ solution, but this is not very realistic. Taking each individual child and looking at many different aspects of the contributory factors in measured ways, then addressing the multiple factors individually, is a more rational, intelligent, efficient, cost effective approach.”

Mark has spent many years developing a unique method of treating children with ADHD and similar problems. The Sunflower Therapy calls on a variety of treatments, which may include osteopathy, homoeopathy, nutritional therapy and other approaches and Mark has treated 100's of children over the years. In fact, the therapy has been so successful that he has trained more than 100 practitioners in the UK and Europe to use it and he has set up the Sunflower Trust to help fund treatment for children whose parents would otherwise be unable to afford it.
