Royal commemorative items from 1911 coronation on sale at auction

STAR Digital Marketing Services Ltd

16th October 2007 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Royal commemorative items from 1911 coronation on sale at auction

Two antique jewellery items commemorating the coronation of George V in 1911 are coming up for sale at auction later this month.

They are among 970 lots at the antique and modern jewellery auction at Fellows & Sons in Birmingham, UK.

The firm’s managing partner Stephen Whittaker said it’s amazing to see commemorative items like this from nearly a hundred years ago.

He said: “Royal events have always been popular, and in the last 25 years we have seen a huge explosion in cheap items to commemorate births, death and marriages.

“These two items are of a much higher quality, and are extremely collectable.”

The first item (illustrated) is a 15 carat gold seed pearl set bar brooch, with the initials G and M, together with the letter V and the year 1911.

The letters are in the form of a single monogram, with a small green and red enamelled crown.

It is stamped on the back and comes with a fitted box.

The brooch is expected to sell for between £220 and £400.

The second item is a pendant mounted George V full sovereign.

It is dated 1911 and has a twisted design border on a 9 carat gold chain.

Fellows & Sons’ jewellery experts have examined it, and they say it is in generally good condition, with no visible damage.

There are some minor scratches and dents from general wear and tear.

The pendant is valued at £100 to £150.

George V’s coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911, after the death of his father Edward VII more than a year earlier.

The antique jewellery sale is on Thursday 18th October 2007, starting at 10.30am.

There are also 100's of modern jewellery items up for sale.

Fellows has invested heavily in virtual catalogues online, and technology to allow buyers anywhere in the world to monitor sales and make bids over the internet.
