New survey reveals we are a take away nation
EMBARGOED UNTIL 00:01 ON TUESDAY 11 OCTOBER
SURVEY REVEALS BRITAIN IS NATION OF TAKEAWAY ADDICTS
A new survey has revealed that UK citizens scoff over 2 billion takeaway meals each year! Forty per cent of us have a takeaway at least once a week whilst fourteen per cent order two or more every seven days.
Thirty-eight per cent admitted feeling guilty after eating a takeaway – with women twice as likely to feel guilty as men - but seventy-eight per cent of British adults would be happy to feed a takeaway to their children. Fifty-eight per cent admitted that they have no idea of the fat and calorie content of their favourite takeaways – the average takeaway meal contains over 1,000 calories.
The survey of 3,000 adults, conducted by WindSetlers, discovered that the nation’s favourite takeaway is a Chinese with forty-three per cent of the votes. An Indian takeaway was favoured by twenty-four per cent and old British speciality fish and chips got fourteen per cent of the votes. Forty-three per cent admitted that they order the same takeaway dishes each time.
Sixty-eight per cent – over 66% – said the main reason they order a take-away is because they are too tired or busy to cook whilst thirty-nine per cent said it was simply because they love the taste. Twenty-three per cent said they have a takeaway number stored on their mobile phone whilst a staggering twenty-one per cent admitted their local take-away restaurant knows their name and order by memory!
Thirty-three per cent regularly suffer from stomach complaints such as bloating and indigestion following eating a takeaway. Nutritionist Doctor Chris Fenn said: “People need to think as much about what types of food they are eating as how often and how much they eat. Take-away food should be regarded as a rare treat but they are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of reasons including people’s hectic lifestyles. Not only can takeaways contribute to health conditions such as bloating and indigestion in the short term but consistent consumption can also lead to obesity in the long-term. In Britain two-thirds of the adult population is currently overweight.”
Top ten takeaway dishes:
1. Crispy duck
2. Sweet and sour
3. Cod and chips
4. Meat pizza
5. Tikka Massala
6. Chow mein
7. Korma
8. Burger and chips
Regions that orders most takeaways (per person):
1. North East
2. North West
3. Midlands
4. London
5. South West
6. Scotland
7. Wales
8. South East
